Does your company pay to dispose of clean & useful waste materials that could be re-used?

Children’s Scrapstore collects over 80 tonnes of business waste materials every year from the Bristol area at no charge. We are also interested in household materials if suitable, and can collect in larger quantities. Smaller quantities must be delivered to us.

The materials we are able to collect range from reusable off-cuts, over-runs, rejected materials and production process by-products TO unwanted finished goods of all sorts. These are collected from around 350 Bristol-area based small, medium and multinational businesses and manufacturers.

See below for a full list of material types suitable for scrapstores. Insert hyperlink on “full list of material types” to take you straight down to the list lower on page (11 Scrap donateions page 2)

These are brought back to our warehouse in St Werburghs in Bristol. Here they are made available as creative materials and educational resources to local community groups working with children and adults.  These groups include after-school clubs, youth clubs, uniform groups (cubs, Brownies etc.), schools, college courses, community artists, community groups, theatre groups, etc.

Why re-use?

Re-using waste materials is common sense. By donating your company’s unwanted waste materials to us, it saves the resources and energy needed to produce new materials, and involves none of the energy consumption or waste associated with recycling and reprocessing. Re-using materials is economically self-sustaining and unlike domestic recycling, requires little government or industry subsidy.

Who benefits?
  • Businesses can save money by reducing their waste disposal costs.
  • Businesses may be able to use their materials donations in working towards ISO 14001 or  BS 8555 environmental standards management for industry
  • Company employees benefit from a feel-good factor when good materials are put back into the community as a useful resource rather than being thrown away.
  • The tonnage of waste going into landfill is reduced, benefiting the environment and saving money for local authorities by extending the life of landfill sites.
  • Local children and adults are given access to affordable creative resources.
  • The community benefits as jobs are created from materials that would have been buried forever
Free waste disposal

So what do you have to pay for this extraordinary service? Nothing - we do not charge at all for this service. Children’s Scrapstore will collect your clean, safe business waste for free.

How to arrange a collection

If you have reusable materials, call Charlie Mason on 0117 908 2091.  We'll ask you some questions about the type of material, quantity, and location. Then we assess your materials' re-use potential over the phone, or arrange an inspection if we’re unsure. If suitable, we'll collect from you. If you have a very large quantity (an artic load), we may ask you to deliver to the scrapstore, conveniently located near the end of the M32.

We have a 3.5 tonne box van and run scheduled pick-up routes on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays, normally collecting materials when we have a truck in the area, or can also collect by arrangement. Regular pick-ups can be arranged to suit both parties or alternatively, you can call us when you’ve built up a sufficient quantity.

Clean and safe

Any donated materials must be clean, safe and non-hazardous. We will check this with you over the phone prior to collection.

Quantity

We can take almost any quantity - from a bagful to an articulated lorry load.
However, smaller quantities of household materials (1 or 2 bags) must be delivered to us as our van is busy collecting larger amounts.
Large amounts - e.g. an artic load - may present collection difficulties (though storage is not a problem) but are negotiable with the donor business.

Location & accessibility

We collect in and around Bristol and the old Avon county area but are happy to travel further afield dependent on the type and quantity of materials available.
To make it economical for us to pick up and safe for our drivers, materials must be easily accessible, preferably ground floor and there must be suitable parking close to the materials. If the materials are bulky and heavy we will require help in loading.

Materials We Don’t Accept….

Domestic appliances and furniture, office furniture, household recycling, used paper for recycling, magazines, used food containers and packaging (regardless of how well it’s been cleaned!), used carpet and underlay, treated wood, wood with nails in, large objects – any object that cannot be lifted by 2 people!, used “blank” video cassettes, any chemicals marked with the Hazchem symbol and any cleaning products.
